Western Sydney Institution, originally the University of Western Sydney, is a multi-campus Australian university located in Sydney’s Greater Western district. The university, in its current form, was founded in 1989 as a federated network university after the merger of the Hawkesbury Agricultural College and the Nepean College of Advanced Education.

In 1989, the institution merged with the Macarthur Institute of Higher Education. Instead of being a federation, the Institution of Western Sydney was reformed in 2001 as a single multi-campus university. The institution underwent a makeover in 2015, changing its name from the University of Western Sydney to Western Sydney University.

Western Sydney University has campuses in Bankstown, Blacktown, Campbelltown, Hawkesbury, Liverpool, Parramatta, and Penrith, and offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and higher research degrees. Western Sydney University was ranked in the top 300 universities worldwide in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2021, and 18th in Australia.
