His Serbian-German father Alex Stefanovic and Australian mother Jenny Stefanovic welcomed him into the world. He has a younger brother named Peter Stefanovic who works as a 60 Minutes journalist.

Stefanovic received his education at St Augustines College in Cairns, the Anglican Church Grammar School, and the Queensland University of Technology, from which he earned a journalism degree in 1994.

Stefanovic majored in journalism at the university, but he was unable to find a cadetship after receiving his diploma. He applied for a NIDA audition on the advice of his father, but despite passing several rounds of screening, he was not selected for the program.

He was urged to apply again the following year, but he decided against it and accepted a job offer from WIN Television in Rockhampton.

At a party in Rockhampton in 1995, Stefanovic got to know journalist Cassandra Thorburn, with whom he eventually got married and had three kids. After 21 years of marriage, Stefanovic and his wife announced their separation in September 2016. Their divorce was finally formalized in October 2017.

Stefanovic announced his engagement to Jasmine Yarbrough in February 2018. In a ceremony held in Mexico in December 2018, he wed Yarbrough. Together, they have one child.

As a cadet reporter for WIN in 1994, Karl Stefanovic first worked in Rockhampton and Cairns. For One Network News in New Zealand, Stefanovic joined TVNZ in 1996 as a reporter.

After using the word “tranny” and making other jokes deemed transphobic during a segment on Today in July 2016, Karl Stefanovic received backlash from the LGBT community.

He issued a public apology on the program on July 29, 2016, the day after the segment, admitting that “I was an ignorant tool” and that he had been made aware of how derogatory the term was seen to be.
